Modernising a Distributed, Safety-Critical Operational Network

Delivering scalable, centrally managed connectivity across distributed sites with minimal operational disruption.

About the Client

A UK-based public sector organisation operating across multiple geographically dispersed sites. The organisation plays a critical role in delivering essential services and relies on resilient, secure IT infrastructure to support safety-critical operations and day-to-day activities.

As part of a wider cloud-first strategy, the organisation sought to modernise its legacy network infrastructure to improve scalability, reliability and operational efficiency across all locations.

The Challenge

Following a successful migration of core applications, identity, and end-user services to the cloud, the organisation faced a growing constraint in its ageing, on-premises network infrastructure.

The existing network switches, deployed across multiple geographically dispersed sites, were difficult to manage, costly to maintain, and poorly aligned with the organisation’s modern cloud environment. Limited central visibility and manual configuration increased operational overhead and made scaling or responding to issues more complex.

The organisation required a modern, cloud-managed network solution that could be deployed with minimal disruption to critical operations, while providing centralised control, improved resilience, and long-term flexibility.

Our Approach

Hypercube partnered with the organisation to design and deliver a phased transition to a fully cloud-managed network, combining technical execution with careful planning and knowledge transfer, without interrupting live operations.

  • Cloud-Managed Network Design: Implemented a centralised, cloud-based network management platform to provide real-time visibility, monitoring, and control across all locations.
  • Phased Site Migration: Replaced legacy on-premises switches with modern, cloud-managed hardware at each site, carefully replicating existing configurations to ensure continuity of service during transition.
  • Risk-Minimised Deployment: Coordinated planned implementation windows and conducted validation testing at each location to minimise disruption to safety-critical and operational services.
  • Knowledge Transfer & Enablement: Delivered training, documentation, and updated network diagrams, enabling the internal IT team to confidently manage, maintain, and expand the network independently.

Outcomes

Centralised Network Visibility and Control

The organisation now benefits from a single, cloud-managed view of its network infrastructure across all sites, improving oversight and responsiveness.

Improved Scalability and Operational Efficiency

The modern network architecture simplifies management, reduces manual intervention, and supports future expansion with minimal additional effort.

Minimal Disruption to Critical Operations

All sites were transitioned with carefully planned downtime, ensuring continuity of service across operational environments.

Future-Ready, Cloud-Aligned Infrastructure

The new network integrates seamlessly with the organisation’s wider cloud environment, providing a resilient foundation for ongoing digital transformation.
