Heatio Builds Home Energy Optimisation Platform to Reduce Energy Bills
About Heatio
Heatio is a cleantech leader dedicated to creating a dynamic, low-carbon energy system that empowers homeowners and strengthens the grid. Founded on the principle of making renewable energy reliable, affordable and accessible for everyone, Heatio utilises data-driven technology to deliver tools and services to drive the transition of low-carbon technologies and optimise home energy usage – enabling smarter, more affordable energy control for homes.
The Challenge
As a pioneering startup in cleantech, Heatio recognised the importance of accelerating its data platform development to support its ambitious growth strategy. With an experienced leadership team and deep expertise in renewable energy, Heatio sought a trusted technology partner to enhance its capabilities and codevelop a scalable, future-proof data platform. To drive its ambitious product strategy, Heatio appointed Scott Williams as its Chief Product Officer, bringing extensive experience in the tech industry. Recognising the need for additional strategic guidance, Heatio partnered with Hypercube, with Adam Sroka serving as Fractional CTO, to provide strategic guidance and collaborate on the development of Heatio’s technology roadmap and Home Energy Optimisation Platform.
"The value of working with Hypercube is a couple of things. Firstly,it’s their understanding of the intricacies of the energy market becauseit’s complicated. And secondly, their approach and values are very similar to ours.”

Our Approach
Hypercube partnered with Heatio to shape how its data platform should operate, focusing on both consumer value and long-term scalability. Through this collaboration, Hypercube and Heatio formed a single-team approach to build a technology platform that optimises energy usage to help customers reduce energy costs and generate revenue by selling excess energy back to the grid.
Data Platform
Heatio’s Home Energy Optimisation Platform is deployed on AWS’ real-time streaming architecture, with Databricks providing full data and machine learning platform capabilities to reach market demands and supply challenges. This delivers the environments to collect, ingest, catalogue, store and analyse data from the following sources:
- Battery Inverters
- Heat Pumps
- Solar Panels
- Customer Smart Meters
- Weather and Energy Data
This delivers the foundation to enable future machine learning pipelines through the implementation of robust MLOps practices.
Security and Data Governance
Hypercube implemented stringent data governance practices, including GDPR compliance to protect personally identifiable information (PII), maintaining data anonymity. Encryption technology and tariff data was also applied to ensure the platform is kept secure, alongside cataloguing capabilities using the AWS Glue Catalog and Databricks Unit Catalog, including full lineage capabilities.

Data & AI Strategy
To accomplish the data platform build, Hypercube’s approach focused on
two main areas:
Technology Deployment
Hypercube helped Heatio to mature its existing microservice architecture.
This involved breaking down its platform to standalone components to
enable greater flexibility and resilience. Although this approach requires
a higher initial investment, it positioned Heatio for long-term growth by
allowing it to scale its operations more effectively, with infrastructure
underpinned by Kafka, AWS and Databricks.
Data Skills Acceleration
Hypercube’s data team integrated closely with Heatio’s product team,
fostering a collaborative environment to accelerate the data platform’s
development. This partnership enabled cross-team learning and
innovation, ensuring Heatio’s internal teams were equipped with the tools
and expertise to evolve the platform independently while maintaining
agility and resilience.

Outcomes
By working with Hypercube, Heatio is on a clear trajectory to becoming the go-to home energy platform for consumers.
Scalable platform built in just 6 weeks
The microservices architecture has already demonstrated its scalability, with Heatio seeing immediate benefits from this. The foundation is now in place to support the development of AI and ML capabilities to further enhance the platform.
A tangible data product
In weeks instead of months, Heatio is strongly positioned to contend with growing competition in cleantech optimisation through producing a tangible data product it can deliver to users in the market.
Building a greener future
By optimising home energy usage, Heatio is reducing costs for its customers amid energy price hikes and reducing the load on the National Grid.
"Hypercube comes with a wealth of experience and they understand the energy sector, which is key. We’ve been able to lean into that expertise, enabling us to move much faster. In 6 weeks we’ve built a foundational data platform that allows us to integrate energy devices, monitor performance and optimise them in realtime. The team have done brilliant work.”
